This is the primary website and blog for Don Rickert Musical Instruments, a bespoke lutherie practice that designs and makes historic, custom and ground-breaking modern musical instruments, generally instruments played with a bow, such as violins, fiddles and violas. We are presently engaged in adding a collection of historically-inspired banjos to our portfolio.

Industrial Designer, Maker, Luthier & Owner
We soon will be offering several Mountain Banjo options, an historic Gourd Banjo and a Boucher-inspired Minstrel type banjo with some modern features such as an optional truss rod and a larger number of brackets. We are also working on another later Minstrel-inspired banjo with frets. None of our banjos will be exact copies of any specific banjo. Don Rickert Musical Instruments maintains an online retail store, the new Don Rickert Musician Shop (www.donrickertmusicianshop.com).
The images below show the main types of instruments I am building these days. Clicking on any of the images brings up a brief descriptive summary, with links to more detailed information, including full product descriptions with pricing information and such. All of these instruments are considered to be “Alternative Violin Family Instruments”. You will want to see the following articles about such instruments:

If you want a plain old violin or fiddle, there are literally thousands of sources. D. Rickert Musical Instruments is one of the few lutheries anywhere that specialize in extended range, low-pitched and unusual bowed string instruments.

The Articles (i.e. Blog Posts)
The articles are the core of this site. They contain more than 15 years of insights related to musical instruments and their design. You will also find product announcements and opinion pieces as well. There are hundreds of posts, so I encourage you to use the ‘Search’ and ‘Select Category’ features at the top of this page.
